Hillary Clinton spoke during the Kentucky Democratic Party's Fundraiser at the state's Convention Center Friday night. After the newly elected Democratic Governor and uncommitted Superdelegate Steve Beshear spoke, the room filled with party music, spotlights, and standing attendees awaiting the former first lady. Check Back Tomorrow For Our Kentucky Primary AnalysisThe lights flashed three times and the music died down signalling that the late arriving Hillary Clinton was about to take the podium. Barack Obama did not attend the Bluegrass state's fundraiser. Instead, the Senator campaigned in the Pacific Northwest state of Oregon. Before introducing Clinton, Democratic National Committee Member Terry McBrayer poked fun at Obama's absence. 'We have been looking for Obama in Kentucky..... I have personally contracted with Dean's milk company and we're putting Obama's picture on a carton of milk to see if we can find him in Kentucky.' Wearing a long, black buttoned aqua blue blazer, Hillary Clinton stepped up and greeted the cheering crowd with the message of inclusion. 'For too long Democrats have let places like Kentucky slip out of the Democratic column because too many people felt our party didn't speak to their values and concerns. Well, I believe if you don't stand for hard working, middle class Americans, you don't stand for much.' Along with her main message of 'jobs, jobs, jobs,' Clinton used her time attacking George Bush and the Republican party's policies. 'We've had seven years of a President who has given tax breaks to billionaires and allowed our jobs to get shipped overseas. Seven years of a President who's put corporate special interests first, and hard working families second. Seven years of a President who has done a great job looking out for the wealthy and the well connected. And that is seven years too long.' 'Kentucky always picks the President,' according to the former first lady. The last two presidential contests resulted in George W. Bush beating Al Gore by 15.13% and John Kerry by 17.33%. In the two races before that, Bill Clinton won Kentucky both times. After mentioning having received a Louisville Slugger as a gift, Clinton told the supportive group that she will 'always go to bat' for the Kentucky voters. The commonwealth's Democratic party benefited from the New York Senator's appearance, raising $50 dollars per plate during the fundraiser. When asked for assistance raising cash for the Kentucky Democrats, she says her only question was 'when and where,' showing her willingness to 'build a strong Democratic Party' This election provides the opportunity for the Democrats to 'turn the Bluegrass state Blue'. A recent Kentucky poll shows Clinton ahead of Barack Obama by 32 points. LA Times and Bloomberg also conducted a May 9 national head to head poll showing Clinton doing slightly better than Obama versus McCain. If Hillary Clinton becomes the party's nominee, she may improve the Democrats chances of capturing the state. Check back with us for continuing coverage of the 2008 Presidential ElectionTrackback(0)
