Hillary Clinton at AIPAC

In the morning after the final day of primaries, Hillary Clinton made a slight dig at Barack Obama in front of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee meeting in Washington, D.C.

Subtly mocking the Illinois Senator's rhetoric of attacking lobbying groups and subsequently , Senator Clinton said:

Now I know there are some who say, 'You shouldn't be here.' Who say speaking up for a strong American-Israeli relationship is somehow at odds with America's interests.

I believe that speaking up for a strong American-Israeli relationship is essential to our interests and I reject... I reject that our common commitment to Israel's survival and well being is not in the best interests of the United States of America.

I think you not only have a right to stand up for what you believe in you have a responsibility as Americans to do so. You are acting in the highest American tradition, exercising a right enshrined in our Constitution, , and I applaud you for it.

Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama also spoke earlier in front of AIPAC, the largest American pro-Israeli lobbying group.

During the gathering, Hillary Clinton also mentioned the United Nations World Conference Against Racism held in in 2001. This event was attended by leaders including Kofi Annan, Jesse Jackson, Yasser Arafat, and Fidel Castro.

Prior to this event, a resolution was drawn equating Zionism with racism. This resolution was later withdrawn from the conference.

Hillary Clinton condemned the anti-Semitic statements made during the first Durban Conference. Today, in front of AIPAC she said:

Our vigilance against anti-Semitism must go beyond the Middle East. It must receive no quarter anywhere in the world. The next President will face a test of resolve on this issue at the 2009 Durban Conference, also called 'Durban 2'.

I will never forget how the world's first conference against racism became a mockery of itself when it descended into anti-Semitism and hatred.

The must never be repeated. We should take very strong action to insure anti-Semitism is kept off the agenda at 'Durban 2', and if those efforts should fail, I believe that the United States should boycott that conference.

'Durban 2', will be held in Geneva, Switzerland in April 2009. The United States is listed as one of the countries contemplating boycotting the conference.
