Since Senator Obama has started his historic run for the White House, people have scrambled to compare him to previous great leaders. Fans of Obama liken him to JFK, MLK, and sometimes Bill Clinton. Opponents of Obama say he's more like Jimmy Carter. I would like to offer my own opinion...Barack Obama is like Ned Lamont.

Ned Lamont was the man who ran against Sen. Joe Lieberman in the 2006 Connecticut Democratic Primary. The well funded Lamont had very little political experience, but his anti-war sentiments caused many liberal bloggers to go ga-ga for him. The Lamont phenomenon seemed to take some in the Democratic party a bit by surprise. Joe Lieberman was not only the Senator for Connecticut for nearly two decades, but he ran as the Vice Presidential candidate with Al Gore in 2000.

Ned Lamont won the Democratic primary with 52% of the vote. The bloggers who supported him were thrilled. Many had felt that they had achieved victory by overthrowing the "establishment" candidate Joe Lieberman. The only problem was that not all Democrats wanted to embrace Ned Lamont as their choice. Party members were torn between supporting their friend and colleague or the man who had won the Democratic Primary.

Joe Lieberman, feeling slighted by his party, felt strongly that given a choice of three candidates, Lamont, Republican Alan Schlesinger and himself, his state would ultimately throw their confidence behind him. So Joe left the Democratic party and ran as an independent. He went on to win the three way race for his Senate seat.

In the end, Joe Lieberman, who supported the Democratic platform on almost all issues, felt betrayed by his former party. As an Independent, he felt, and continues to feel, freer to disagree with his Democratic colleagues and be friendlier to his Republican colleagues. The bloggers had won and the Democrats ended up losing.

It seems now that many of those same bloggers who supported Ned Lamont, in addition to numerous other cyber upstarts, are now backing Barack Obama. Their often fanatic, sometimes angry and viscous rhetoric fills the internet, even though Senator Obama has already 'won' the primary. They are splitting the Democratic party in much the same way they split it in Connecticut.

And where is Ned Lamont now? He is the Connecticut campaign co-chair for Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

The economy is crashing. Both parties blame each other. President Bush did nothing to prevent this and congress led by Democrats did nothing to prevent his.
